New to Street Photography?

When I started Street Photography 7 or 8 years ago, I was just snapping people, their movements and their behaviour in everyday life, as simple as that. But I was a beginner then.

The city that I do most of my Street Photography in is Edinburgh, we have so little light here and that makes it very difficult. But I love Street so much, I don’t want to give up because of the lack of light, I’m sure there are ways to deal with it, we just have to adapt to our surroundings.

If you are new to Street Photography, don’t set your targets  too high. I know there are lot’s of advanced Street Photographers out there on social media like Facebook, Instagram, Flickr and more. But, who are you competing with? Yourself or them?

Based on my personal experience, I only focus on what I do on the street, I don’t really care about what others opinions are towards it, I do what I think is OK for myself. It’s my time, my  camera and my own creations. People who don’t like my Photography, that is their perogative.

Going back to the subject, what was my ambition when I started Street Photography? Here is a list that might help you:

  • People and background.

  • People at the bench.

  • People at the window.

  • People and their pet.

  • Alone.

  • People in a crowd.

  • Couple.

  • Self portrait.

You see, those are based on people and their activities, it seems easy to do until you go out there and practice on your own. What I believe, Street photography is a personal choice,  go out alone and take your time to observe.

My tips:

  • Don’t hide from your subject, if they realise that you took their photo and they don’t complain about it, you are winning!
  • Get closer. See what it’s like being as close as possible to your subject with your camera ready, trust your gut instinct and take the chance.
  • Smile after you take their picture, you’ll be surprise by some of the reactions from your subjects after you candid them.

I hope this blog help you…..
Last words: Those images above are from my early days, they are not always great. The purpose is to make you guys who are new to Street Photography understand that we all started from somewhere. There is no magic, just hard work and fun!

  1. Bei consigli.
Iniziare con fotografare tutto per poi trovare un argomento su cui specializzarsi sia un buona cosa. Senza dimenticarsi che anche i più grandi hanno iniziato così!

  2. Thank you for this! I have been taking photos for quite some time now and have had a dream of doing street photography and documentary-style photography. However, I’ve been terrified to actually do it. It’s time for me to overcome those fears!
